Ephedra aka Ma Huang experiences

Ephedra also known as Ma Huang is banned in several states due to legislation calling it dangerous. Prior to that, it was frequently sold in many drugstores.

Side-Effects of Ephedra or Ma Huang (used in many fat burners) has amphetamine-like side effects, can include: elevated blood pressure, rapid heart beat, nervousness, irritability, headache, urination disturbances, vomiting, muscle disturbances, insomnia, dry mouth, heart palpitations, and even death due to heart failure4. It interacts with drugs such as MAO-inhibiting antidepressants, digitoxin, or guanethidine, thus you should consult a physician before taking Ephedra or Ma Huang. See CNN article on the danger of taking herbs and drugs which interact with each other. FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) have determined that products contain the combination of Ma Huang and kola nut, a source of caffeine, can cause severe injury to people even under conditions of usual or recommended use. Reported reactions range from serious, life-threatening conditions such as irregular heartbeat, heart attack, stroke, seizures, hepatitis and psychosis, to relatively minor and temporary conditions such as dizziness, headache and gastrointestinal distress.

Experiences with the herb varied from weight loss to heart palpitations.

I am on this herb now. I also have high blood pressure. My doctor told me that since my pressure is controlled, he sees no reason why I cannot take this herb. I have not found it to be harmful in any way. I have been taking it for 3 weeks now and have lost 11 pounds. I take it in combination with some other herbs and vitamins.

I know from personal experience that my version of the Ephedra/Caffeine/Aspirin stack causes my blood pressure to go up some. One day after I got done in the gym I went by a Walmart and used a blood pressure checking machine they had in their pharmacy section. The machine showed my blood pressure, both systolic and diastolic, as being somewhat elevated above what it is normally, which is fairly low. I would imagine that my blood pressure went back down to normal before the day was over with. Of course one’s blood pressure varies to some extent from reading to reading, but I knew mine was elevated because it was quite a bit above normal and I have measured it quite a few times in the recent past.

I am currently on a nutrition system that includes vitamins that contain epherine. I have been on the system for alomst two months and have lost almost 15 pounds. My appetite has shrunk tremendiously and I
have lost my craving for many “bad” foods. This is not the only benefit. I also have more energy, am more alert and have more of a desire to exercise. The system has been very successful for me and I plan to be on at least the vitamins for the rest of my life! Once I am at my target weight, I do plan to increase my food portions by changing to the vitamins with less epherine in them. I understand that the public has to be alerted to problems with any substance, but come on. Taking 35 asprin at one time could kill you. Excess of the substance is the problem, not the substance itself.

I’ve extracted it for personal use but I only use it for its decongestant properties when I have a cold. The active ingredient is ephedrine which works well for me and has none of the side effects that the synthesized version used in Actifed and Sudafed have caused me. I have never seen it recommended for use in weight loss by any responsible herbalist. There are books available on herbs and their use, generally the best selection is found in health food stores. I would recommend against using any preparation sold as
a diet aid with Ma Huang as an ingredient, it is a fairly powerful herb.
