I am up there in age, but after all the years I’ve spent using diet medication, I am still unable to succeed in losing weight unless I take meds. The main *properties* in this pill do not suppress the appetite…as much as they give you an incredible sense of well being which in turn gives you the ability to resist screwing up your diet! (If this makes any sense). Prozac, for example is being used for bulemia, and OCD, because the energy one gets from the drug, starts the domino effect…You feel good…you don’t eat as much, because you’re not so depressed…you feel optimistic….plus, when you see the weight drop off, you buy something towear….yada….yada…

I have my own theories about overweight conditions, depression, and chemical imbalances. But most people prefer to lable diet pill users as weak, depending on a crutch, etc. THAT’S O.K.!!…..I suffered so much in my life, as a result of being fat, because I was depressed…..OR depressed, because I was fat!…..It doesn’t matter anymore to me….What ever works, I use. I endorse diet meds, and make it my business to keep supplied. …I love the feeling of being totally awake, and productive…I feel my creativity is in full swing….Didrex is still being written, because it hasn’t gone over to the schedule II.

It’s a few molecules off from dexedrine or benzedrine, but who cares? So many other diet drugs are really unsafe. An honest doctor will tell you the same. When I don’t take these pills, I am cranky, tired and feel like there’s a cotton filter in my head. Nothing is crystal clear. I have had no side-effects in 20 years, \thus, the continued use.

Listen to your body”.

The key is still exersize, with or without the drugs. Drugs made it much easier for me to get to the gym at the beginning. I was also inclined to work just a little harder and longer than I would’ve. I have a very hearty muscley frame however, and hate that feeling of “wuss-ness” or weakness, and always looked forward to gaining strength and endurance.

I am now on Didrex. Love it. Works like phentermine did when I first started taking it. Lots of energy, not hungry, motivated to exercise etc. I’ve lost 2 lbs. the first week.

My plan is to stay on it, until I reach my goal weight then drop back to phentermine to maintain.

Since it’s not prescribed much, I did have trouble finding a pharmacy that had it. Walgreeens had to special order it for me (It only took an extra day, so no big deal). Price was $31.00 for 30 day supply. My doctor was willing to prescribe it since I have not had much luck with other meds – Phentermine (worked for a long time, but then I hit a plateau), Tenuate (didn’t loose any), Tenuate + Phentermine (didn’t loose), and most recently Meridia (2 lbs per month).

My understanding is that it has a bad rap because it supposedly has a high abuse potential. But they said that about phentermine, and Doctors say that they see very few cases of abuse. My theory is that people who are overweight have lower levels of dopamine than thin people, and that these dopamine releasing stimulants bring us up to the level of a “naturally thin” person. They modify our behavior so that we think and act more like a “thin person”.

One dieter shares:

Didrex is the “speediest” diet pill out there. And also a lot less frequently precribed, so you may not see the same economies of scale compared to a drug like phertermine. Where are you getting these prices? From the little price shopping I’ve done, generic phendimetrazine (brand names Bontril, Prelu-II) isn’t a whole lot more expensive than generic phentermine. I don’t know anything at all about the price of Didrex or its generic equivalents.

Phentermine is a C-IV controlled substance; phendimetrazine (Bontril) and Didrex (benzphetamine) are both in C-III, because they’re believed to have a higher abuse potential than the C-IV anorectic drugs like phentermine, mazindol and diethylpropion. (As a comparison,
dextroamphetamine/Dexedrine is a C-II drug and requires special Rx blanks, no refills, and is much more tightly controlled.) While there’s no doubt about dextroamphetamine’s abuse potential, the classification of the other drugs was pretty much a subjective decision on the part of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

You would expect almost complete cross-tolerance between these drugs, since they all act more or less identically. I’ve just tried Bontril after being on phentermine for about a year, and I frankly don’t notice much of a difference subjectively (stimulation) or objectively (my weight).
But your mileage may vary–I’m pretty impervious to most drug’s side effects. Benzphetamine is metabolized in part to methamphetamine and amphetamine, which may explain its reputation for having a greater abuse potential than phentermine, and also has the drawback of making
you test positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine in urine drug screens. I’ve never tried it, so can’t share my own experience with it.
