Meridia
Upon its introduction to the public, Meridia was hailed as the next diet wonder drug. The reality is that it is a failed antidepressant related chemically and pharmacologically to the antidepressant venlafaxine (Effexor). It did not work as effectively on managing depression in test subjects, but one of its noted side effects was weight loss, therefore the maker of the drug decided to market Meridia as a diet drug. After all, why waste all that time and money and shelve a now very expensive product.
