What is Hoodia?
It is an herb used by Kalahari’s San bushmen to ward off hunger and thirst during long hunting trips across the African desert. The active ingredient in the plant is P57. Currently, there are studies being done of P57 alone, in order to create a future diet drug.

Hoodia tricks your hypothalamus (the part of the brain tha regulates hunger) into believing that it is glucose. Proponents of hoodia claim the drug prevents you from feeling hungry for up to six hours. They also say that hoodia is 10,000 times more potent than glucose when it comes to signaling fullness to your hyopthalamus.

Hoodia has been in the news a great deal recently and not just for its weight loss qualities. Diet giant Trimspa has been sued in California for claiming its namesake product contained hoodia, when a chemical analysis showed no presence of the herb in the product.

Hoodia Experiences
I used hoodia daily for 3 months. It definitely curbed my appetite. But, the effectiveness seemed to decrease as time went on. Side affects for me were slight headaches.

I stopped taking hoodia because I'm at my goal weight (50 pounds gone since Jan. 1 '04). I have a handful of pills left and will probably use them eventually, but I don't plan to go back to daily hoodia consumption. Hoodia works, especially at first. I can't recommend it as a permanent thing though.
