One dieter shares:
Didrex is the “speediest” diet pill out there. And also a lot less frequently precribed, so you may not see the same economies of scale compared to a drug like phertermine. Where are you getting these prices? From the little price shopping I’ve done, generic phendimetrazine (brand names Bontril, Prelu-II) isn’t a whole lot more expensive than generic phentermine. I don’t know anything at all about the price of Didrex or its generic equivalents.
Phentermine is a C-IV controlled substance; phendimetrazine (Bontril) and Didrex (benzphetamine) are both in C-III, because they’re believed to have a higher abuse potential than the C-IV anorectic drugs like phentermine, mazindol and diethylpropion. (As a comparison,
dextroamphetamine/Dexedrine is a C-II drug and requires special Rx blanks, no refills, and is much more tightly controlled.) While there’s no doubt about dextroamphetamine’s abuse potential, the classification of the other drugs was pretty much a subjective decision on the part of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
You would expect almost complete cross-tolerance between these drugs, since they all act more or less identically. I’ve just tried Bontril after being on phentermine for about a year, and I frankly don’t notice much of a difference subjectively (stimulation) or objectively (my weight).
But your mileage may vary–I’m pretty impervious to most drug’s side effects. Benzphetamine is metabolized in part to methamphetamine and amphetamine, which may explain its reputation for having a greater abuse potential than phentermine, and also has the drawback of making
you test positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine in urine drug screens.
I’ve never tried it, so can’t share my own experience with it.

Another contributor states:
I have been taking the generic form of Didrex 25 mg tablets twice daily. One before breakfast and one before lunch. The drug doesn’t seem to supress my appetite like Phentermine did but also I haven’t experienced any serious side effects with this drug. I did have luck with Phentermine but had the constant trouble with restlessness and nervousness in addition to the
jitters.

One reader shared her brief experience with Didrex:
My experience with Didrex was that i became totally strung out on them.
Addicted. The effects are immediate. Tolerance will develop after about 10 days and
your body will require more of the drug to achieve the same effect.

I recently stumbled upon a webpage authored by a woman who has lost 70 pounds. I was particularly impressed by the ‘diet tips’ section of her site. My favorite pearl of wisdom from the list was:
Beware of absolutes: If you hear someone say something like “Never consume any dairy!”, “Stay away from all sodas period!” or “You can’t eat at McDonald’s, ever!” this should be a red flag. Different things work for different people.

Here’s another take on hoodia:
I used hoodia daily for 3 months. It definitely curbed my appetite. But,
the effectiveness seemed to decrease as time went on. Side affects for me
were slight headaches.
I stopped taking hoodia because I’m at my goal weight (50 pounds gone since
Jan. 1 ‘04). I have a handful of pills left and will probably use them
eventually, but I don’t plan to go back to daily hoodia consumption.
Hoodia works, especially at first. I can’t recommend it as a permanent
thing though.
